![]() This ribbon cutting was dedicated to the new and improved airport terminal in Prescott Regional Airport. This first class airport servicing the entire area was also selected as the Airport of the Year for 2020. The inside of the terminal has a modern design with beautiful high wooden ceiling beams as displayed in the above picture. This long term project had a timely ending due to construction costs soaring this last year, in many cases materials have more than doubled in cost. Mayor Greg Mengarelli thanked all the past city council members, current city council and past Prescott Mayors for their hard work, dedication and planning of our brand new Airport Terminal. Many key individuals who helped with the airport design and construction were in attendance along with the Prescott Chamber of Commerce board members/ ambassadors and notable local representatives. Also in attendance was Mike S-Dao with United Airlines West Coast as their Senior Regional Manager. A prominent individual in overseeing the development of the new airport was Dr. Robin Sobotta, the Airport Director and past professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Prescott Mayor Greg Mengarelli will host a “Town Hall Meeting” to discuss mental health services and resources to citizens on Tuesday, April 6 at 1 p.m. at Prescott City Hall, Council Chambers, or via Zoom.
There will be a panel of speakers including Leslie Horton, Director of Yavapai County Community Health Services, April Rhodes, Chief Executive Officer for Spectrum Health, Tamara Player, Chief Executive Officer for West Yavapai Guidance Clinic, representatives from Yavapai Justice and Mental Health Coalition, and a representative from Terros Health. “As we are coming out of the worst of the pandemic, I think it’s important to talk about how our citizens and their families are doing, and what resources are available,” said Mayor Mengarelli. “We have a great group of resource people ready to share some insights, and answer questions.” Citizens will be able to participate via video conference, by phone, or in person. Questions will be taken following the speakers, using the Chat feature on Zoom. To RSVP for in-person attendance at the event, please email: [email protected] or call 928-777-1248. Governor Doug Ducey signed legislation making National Navajo Code Talkers Day a legal state holiday every year on August 14, honoring the courage of the Code Talkers and their critical role in the Allied victory of WWII.
“The Navajo Code Talkers are American heroes,” said Governor Ducey. “They assisted on every major operation involving the U.S. Marines in the Pacific theatre, using their native language to come up with an unbreakable code. More than 400 Code Talkers answered the call to serve our nation, and Arizona is grateful for their dedication to protecting our nation. I’m proud to sign legislation that makes National Navajo Code Talkers day an official holiday, and I thank Senator Peshlakai for leading on this initiative.” Under Senate Bill 1802, if National Navajo Code Talkers Day falls on a day other than Sunday, the Sunday following August 14 is to be observed as the holiday. “It’s important that all Arizonans remember the service and bravery of the Navajo Code Talkers,” said Senator Jamescita Peshlakai, who sponsored the legislation. “Their crucial service during WWII will not be forgotten, and we will continue to honor them every August 14th. Thank you to everyone who supported Senate Bill 1802.” Last year, Governor Ducey issued a proclamation and posted a video recognizing Navajo Code Talkers Day. The Governor has issued four proclamations to honor the Code Talkers since 2017. The United States government recruited and enlisted more than 400 Navajo men to serve in standard communications units. The Navajo Code Talkers used their unbreakable code to assist in every major operation involving the United States Marines in the Pacific Ocean theatre, including during the battle at Iwo Jima where they successfully transmitted more than 800 messages without error. Navajo Code Talkers Day was established through a presidential proclamation by President Ronald Reagan on August 14, 1982. In 2014, Arizona passed legislation declaring every August 14 Navajo Code Talkers Day in Arizona. Pre-Construction Agreement Signed with Haley Construction Prescott Center for the Arts (PCA) announced today they have signed a pre-construction agreement with Prescott-based Haley Construction as the contractor on their new multipurpose Studio Theater project. The Studio Theater will be an 8,300 square-foot, two-story structure, built on the parking lot space adjacent to the current PCA administration building on North Marina St. in Prescott. There will also be an outdoor amphitheater as well.
“We were impressed with the personal attention Haley showed in the selection process and their extensive experience in constructing and renovating Prescott’s most historic and sustainable buildings,” commented Russ Shedd, PCA board member and project manager. “The plans will be submitted to the City of Prescott in early April, and we are hoping for expeditious approval to be able to break ground in early Summer,” Shedd added. “We are extremely excited to work with PCA to expand upon such a valuable part of our community’s heritage,” Gillian Haley, owner of Haley Construction commented. “This is personal to us. I remember my Mom putting together art shows in the gallery, and I was in plays as a kid. We want our children to enjoy the same enriching experiences,” Haley added. |
